Last Breath
At the end of the hallway there was a kind of half-rotten grate. A small ventilation duct led into what looked like the main hallway that ran between Tokyo2 and Lexington. Kelvin, shimmied through, chose a direction and started walking. On the way back Dade started asking questions.
"Was Kate by to see us?"
"Yeah," said Kelvin.
"Did you miss me?" Dade asked.
"No."
"Is that the longest I've been gone?"
"I don't know. Maybe. Dade, do you remember anything, from when you were asleep?"
"Yeah, everything. There was a girl, well, she wasn't a girl, but we were in front of a big window and we were looking at Helikon, oh Kelv it was beautiful and the food... "
"Not your dreams," said Kelvin, "I mean, anything from what I was doing, while you were gone."
"It wasn't a dream Kelv, this was different. You don't know, you weren't there, at all."
"So you don't remember anything about me, just the dream?"
"Not a dream," Dade said.
"Okay, not a dream, but you don't remember anything?" Kelvin asked.
"Nope. I was looking through the cameras, trying to look real far into the station, to see if there were cameras. Then you fell over and everyone ran to help, little Suzu was there." Dade was sad again and had to pause. "Then it got real dark and I woke up by myself. And then Petra was there."
"The girl from your dream?" Kelvin asked.
"Petra wasn't a girl," Dade corrected him.
"And it wasn't a dream. Right. I get it."
"She was a neutrally designated minor, but she's not a minor anymore because, Kelv a minor means you're less than eighteen calendars, but she has more than two hundred calendars. She just looks like she only has eighteen on her. She doesn't look old at all."
Kelvin could tell that Dade wanted him to ask more about the dream, if only to keep his attention off of poor Suzu and her grandmother. He always liked to tell Kelvin about dreams, but Kelvin's mind was still working on the problem of Sisa.
It was clear that something had to be done. Dade was back, Boto was back, funny how brothers ruined things. The village was unsafe. It had no boundaries. Anyone could slip in or out of those halls from the outside. If he could do something about Boto, it would be safe again. The last time Kelvin had tried to fight Sisa's family, Boto's mother had strangled him. Boto had nearly cut them apart. He couldn't hope to fight Boto alone. It had been foolish of him to run into the wilds by himself today.
The people in the village were angry, so perhaps he could convince them to hunt down the one who had killed Suzu and Kameyo Rhineborn, but the people in the village were no warriors, they weren't even hunters and Boto would smell them coming miles away.
Dade was still talking about his dream, but Kelvin had become so used to Dade's dreams he could tune it out completely.
Kelvin knew that Dade could help against Boto. In some parts of the station, users could be very dangerous.
